The School in the Trees- Historical Inquiry

This term 2V are enjoying delving into the history of our wonderful “School in the Trees”. To facilitate a deeper understanding of the content, we have been using visible thinking. This has seen a greater motivation for learning and students are evidently curious and  eager to uncover the school’s rich history through their own inquiry.

To engage the students and set the scene for the inquiry they were shown the image below and using the See, Think, Wonder thinking routine were asked the following questions:

  • What do you see?

  • What do you think is going on?

  • What does it make you wonder?

Students typed their responses into Google Slides and the answers were quite varied. Some students did not make the connection that the image was in fact a building that is currently on our school grounds. Whereas others straight away were quite confident about what the building was and amazingly even had an idea about how old it could be!  Using a thinking routine, such as See, Think Wonder was a a great tool to start to our inquiry and to activate students’ prior knowledge.

Stay tuned to share in our learning about our School in the Trees.
